Well…That Didn’t Go As Planned

October 26, 2011

From the time I found out I was pregnant, I knew I was going to have a natural birth. I found a doula early. I spent many hours practicing my breathing and labor techniques. I had my mom and husband on board.  They both knew what the game plan was – no matter what, I was not to have an epidural or any drugs. I was ready to for the long haul.

At my 39th week office visit, the doctor had an alarmed look on his face. I immediately knew something was wrong.  He called in a nurse and then the scheduling coordinator.  They told me I was going to have to go to the hospital tonight to be induced. I looked at him like he had three heads. Umm, no I was having a natural labor – and that meant I was waiting for my water to break and so forth.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite happen that way. A few hours later, I found myself in the hospital with a Pitocin drip. Labor pains came fast and furious, and by 8pm that night I was in labor.

I made it through most of the night without wanting to injure anyone.  The morning came and my labor  pains became very intense. The only problem was, I wasn’t progressing.

I made it through most of the next day without any meds. I do remember kicking my husband a few times.  I was however, happy that I made it this far with no drugs.

At 3pm the next day, my entire delivery plan was shattered. The doctor came in and could barely hear a heartbeat. Everything went crazy.  I had an emergency c-section and Evan was literally born within 30 minutes.

It turned out that the cord was wrapped around Evan’s neck. It took a little bit for him to cry. When I was laying there waiting, it seem like an eternity until I heard his little voice.

My delivery did not go as plan by any stretch of the imagination. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get to have a natural delivery. In the end, I had a healthy baby boy–I couldn’t ask for anything more.
