YOUR Challenge: For the Health and Well-Being of Mothers Everywhere

January 4, 2012

These deaths and injuries are preventable, and the time to take action is now.

In poor countries, too many women often deliver children without skilled or trained attendants, without access to emergency obstetric care when needed for complications, without medical equipment, and without even electricity or running water in their local clinics and hospitals. Millions of women around the world do not have access to contraceptive methods they want to help them plan the number and spacing of their children. And one in every three women worldwide is physically or sexually assaulted in her lifetime.

We need to make the health and well-being of girls and women a top priority. Women are important to families, communities and nations. There are many proven, life-saving solutions that will allow them to survive, thrive and live to their full potential. At our global conference last year, over 3,400 experts, from advocates to physicians to midwives to Health Ministers, shared some of these ideas and urged the world to act. These solutions ranged from doctors using mobile technology to share maternal health information with expectant mothers, to the development of youth-led peer education blogs on safe sex and gender equality. Women Deliver is proud to be a partner of the Million Moms Challenge. Social media and digital platforms have transformed the way we communicate, and it’s time to use this technology to help secure the health and wellbeing of mothers everywhere. So, power up, log on, and raise your voice for safe motherhood.
