Calling for Old Cell Phones!

Did you know that donating your old cell phone could save someone’s life?

I’m always surprised when I clean out those catch-all drawers and find old, forgotten cell phones. I always wonder what I should do with them, and inevitably I end up just putting them back in that drawer. Now is the time to put those old phones to good use by donating them, even the phone you have been thinking of changing, at the end. Do you have any outdated cell phones lying around your house?

Every Mother Countsand Hope Phones are holding a phone collection drive to benefit women in countries where women are at high risk of dying during pregnancy or childbirth. Individuals and communities in the United States are coming together to help  and you can join!

For many women in need of basic maternal health care around the globe, communication links are critical. In rural communities where the closest clinic can take hours to reach, being able to communicate via cell phone with expectant and new mothers can make all the difference.

How Your Old Phones Can Help

Through this phone collection drive, phones that are gathered in the United States are recycled, and the funds generated are used to equip health workers with local cell phones throughMedic Mobile. If only 1 percent of the half-million phones thrown away each year in the United States are instead recycled responsibly, we would be able to give 1 million health workers mobile technology, and in turn improve the lives of at least 50 million people.

Take Action Challenge

Here are some easy ways to get involved:

  1. Send in your old phones. Print out a pre-paid shipping label, follow the instructions on the label, and send it in. Did we mention it’s free?
  2. Hold a phone drive in your area. Ask your neighbors and friends if they will donate their old phones, and put boxes in public places (with permission, of course) to collect phones and send them in with the pre-paid shipping label. Friends in your community will probably be glad to see their old phones go to a worthy cause.
  3. Spread the word. Be a positive voice in your social media realms and encourage others to participate.
